Group Lessons
Children must be at least 3 years of age before entering our group lesson program. Classes for level 1-4 are 30 minutes and will have no more than four students per instructor. Classes for levels 5-7 are 45 minutes and will have no more than six students per instructor. In order to proceed to the next level, the participant must hold a certificate from the previous level or be able to successfully complete all skills from the prior level.
Level 1: Hummingbirds
- Enter and Exit water on own, using ladder, steps, or side
- Place mouth, nose, and eyes under water
- Blow Bubbles in water
- Bob up and down, five times
- Float on front with face in water, with assistance
- Float on back with assistance
- (Ears and toes in water)
- Roll from front to back, while floating
- Assisted freestyle kick with barbell to flags
- Assisted backstroke kick to flags
- Assisted freestyle arm motion to flags
- Assisted elementary backstroke to flags
- Assisted backstroke arm motion to flags
Level 2: Goldfinch
- Stepping or jumping into shoulder-deep water, unassisted
- Bobs (10 times in a row)
- Unassisted front float, face in water
- Tuck floats
- Unassisted back float
- Treading water
- Streamline push off wall
- Unassisted freestyle kicking
- Unassisted kick on back
- Swim, face in, freestyle to flags
- Swim backstroke to flags
- Roll from front to back and back to front
Level 3: Sparrow
- Introduce breathing to side on freestyle (rotary breathing)
- Streamline freestyle and backstroke kick
- Butterfly body motion
- Treading water for at least 30 seconds
- Sitting/kneeling dive from side of pool into deep water.
- Changing from vertical to horizontal position
- Introduce breaststroke kick with kickboard
- Pushing of wall and gliding on front and back in streamline
- Survival float
Level 4: Robins
- Tread water with 2 different kicks
- Freestyle technique:
- Accurate rotary breathing
- Body Roll
- High Elbows, full arm pull
- Introduce freestyle drills
- Backstroke Technique:
- Body Roll
- Introduce backstroke dills
- Butterfly technique:
- Introduce butterfly arm motion and breathing
- Perfecting Butterfly kick (Feet together, no flutter)
- Breaststroke Technique:
- Kicking evenly
- Pull—arms not past hips
- Introduce Flipturns
- Introduce standing Dive
Level 5: Blue Jays
- Freestyle
- Body rotation, even flutter kick, smooth rotary breathing, Correct head/body placement
- Backstroke
- Body rotation, High hips, correct hand placement and arm movement
- Butterfly
- Feet together, kick supports stroke & initiates cycle
- Breaststroke
- Correct kick, stroke, & timing.
- Introduce tuck and pike dives
- Shallow-angle dive in deep water (Racing start dive)
- Introduce backstroke flip turn
- Practice freestyle flip turn
Level 6: Cardinals
- Surface dive to retrieve item from bottom of pool
- Freestyle: 200 Yards
- Back Stroke: 200 Yards
- Breaststroke: 100 Yards
- Butterfly: 100 Yards
- I.M.: 200 Yards
- Flipturns
- Diving from the block
- Introduction to Paceclock
- Introduction to swimming workouts/sets
- Understanding pool distances
- Basic Poolside rescue techniques
- Boating safety
- How to call for help
